Before an agent acts.
Decide who holds authority.

Agent-enabled workflows change more than the speed of a task. They change who can initiate action, on which evidence and with what route to recovery.

A useful agent may assemble evidence, recommend a response or execute a transaction. Those are different responsibilities. The decision to delegate should be made explicitly by the business owner, with the operating consequences in view.

Start with the consequence of being wrong

An incorrect draft can be reviewed before use. An incorrect payment instruction, inventory change or customer commitment can alter the business before anyone notices. Classify the workflow by the consequence and reversibility of each action, not by the fluency of the interface.

Define where the capability must ask, stop or escalate. Approval should be meaningful: the reviewer needs enough evidence and time to challenge the proposed action.

Make permission part of the design

Use the minimum sources and tools required for the workflow. A system that can read a record does not automatically need the authority to change it. Connect permissions to the role and the business purpose, and decide how temporary authority expires.

Record the information used, the action proposed and the approval or policy that permitted it. The aim is an operating history that can explain what happened when the outcome is challenged.

Evaluate the difficult cases

A demonstration usually begins with coherent information. Operational work includes missing records, conflicting instructions, stale policies and unexpected requests. Test these cases before widening authority.

Success criteria should include correct refusal, escalation, recovery and business acceptance—not only task completion. Compare the effort retained in human review with the effort removed from preparation.

Give the operating capability an owner

Agree who maintains the policy, access, evaluation cases and supporting integrations. Define incident response, rollback and the conditions under which the workflow is suspended. Model changes and process changes both require review.

The leadership question is therefore not simply whether agents can execute more work. It is which responsibilities can be delegated with evidence, appropriate control and a business owner willing to stand behind the arrangement.
